Dunlap skiffWOODEN BOAT BUILDING
The New Charleston Mosquito Fleet was originally organized in 1995 as a mentoring group to teach inner-city children about Charleston’s rich history of boat building and boating. The group’s name comes from the original Charleston Mosquito Fleet—skilled black fishermen in small boats who rowed out each morning and sailed back on the evening sea breeze with fish to be sold in the markets of Charleston.

Over the three days of the Charleston In -Water Boat Show, the group will construct a traditional rowing skiff to be raffled off to one lucky winner at the conclusion of the show. Raffle proceeds will benefit The New Charleston Mosquito Fleet.

The New Charleston Mosquito Fleet was founded by the late Edwin Gardner. Edwin was a conservation consultant, community leader and enthusiastic promoter of youth mentoring programs focusing on rowing and boat building as developmental activities. Sadly, Edwin died in 2007 from injuries sustained in a bicycle accident. The group dedicates its continuing efforts to his memory.
